In the 1980's, I helped a close friend of mine, Mrs Lily Crewe, who I'd met through the spiritualist movement, to set up the Pontefract Spiritualist Church. Services are held on Monday nights in an upstairs room within Pontefract Town Hall. It was Lily who first told me the story of the Black Monk of Chequerfield (which is an area of Pontefract). Lily knew Mrs Pritchard, the lady who lived in the house where these poltergeist experiences happened, back in 1966. Mrs Pritchard once told Lily she'd woken up one morning to find marmalade had been smeared all over the handrail on her staircase. Lily asked why she didn't leave her house, Mrs Pritchard said she wouldn't let anything, or anybody, drive her out of her home. (I admire this lady's courage and tenacity, many people would have fled a house which had this type of paranormal activity!)
